After publishing my first Notebook on Amazon, I got inspired to make a matching phone case following the same design. I went with a retro vibe and several vibrant colors. To give it a more realistic look, I choose to mix painting (watercolor and gouache) and cross stitch with my crochet design, and bam! I got this super cute gameboy looking phone case to present you and teach you how to make it too.

You can watch the full tutorial on youtube or follow the written pattern that I decided to share with you here on my website.

So here we go!

Material:

Kartopu anti-pilling acrylic yarn x1 skein - color pink

Several colors of Ricorumi DK yarn - 25 gr per skein

Crochet hooks: 5 mm, 3 mm and 2,5 mm

Monk fabric for cross stitching

DMC thread (light pink)

Gouache or watercolor painting

Glue gun (optional)

4 craft pompons

Abbreviations:

ch : chain

sc: single crochet

hdc: half double crochet

dc: double crochet

sl st : slip stitch

inc: increase

dec: decrease

R: round / row

Pattern:

Please note that you will have to join rounds with a sl st at the end of each one of them, and start next round with a ch1.

Take your acrylic yarn and your 5 mm crochet hook. We're going to crochet the main part of the phone case.

Ch 13

Round 1: starting from the 2nd loop from the hook: 11 sc, (3 sc in the last stitch of the chain), we continue working on the other side of the chain base: 10 sc, (2 sc in the last stitch - it's the same stitch where we started our round) [26]

Round 2: sc inc, 10 sc, sc inc x3, 10 sc, sc inc x2 [32]

R3: 14 sc, sc inc x2, 14 sc, sc inc x2 [36]

R4 to 36: 36 sc [36]

R37: (2 sc, ch1, skip next stitch) repeat this until the end of the round [36]

R38: sc in each stitch and ch1 until the end of the round [36]

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

For the phone case string we will ch 80 then cut yarn and fasten off. Slide the string around and through the holes we made in round 37. Then sew on each ends of the string, 2 craft pompons.

We will now proceed with the console's keys:

With the Ricorumi yarn and the 3 mm crochet hook:

The Cross:

Please note that at the end of each row you have to ch1 then turn your work to make your next row.

Ch 4

Row 1: starting from the 2nd loop from the hook: 3 sc [3]

Row 2 to 3: 3 sc [3]

At the end of row 3, make ch 4 then turn your work.

Row 4: Starting from the 2nd loop from the ch4: 6 sc, then add 3 sc by going through the bottom loop of the previous single crochet you made. (watch the video tutorial at 19:34 to see how) [9]

Row 5 to 6: 9 sc [9]

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Row 7: Join the yarn again with a single crochet in the 4th stitch from the right, 2 sc. [3]

Row 8 to 9: 3 sc [3]

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

The heart buttons (make 2):

Make a magic circle

Round 1: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, ch3, sl st in the magic circle, ch3, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, sl st in the 1st sc of the round.

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

The little oval buttons (make 2):

Ch 2

Round 1: in the 1st loop of the ch 2: make 3 hdc, then ch 1, then sl st in the 1st loop again.

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Screen:

With the Ricorumi yarn and the 2,5 mm crochet hook:

Please note that at the end of each row you have to ch2 then turn your work to make your next row.

Ch 22

Row 1: starting from the 2nd loop from the hook: hdc inc, 20 hdc [22]

Row 2 to 16: 22 hdc [22]

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Take your fabric and count a total of 47 squares width on 43 squares length.

This is where you will paint the background of your screen as you wish.

Let the paint dry then cross stitch the "Press Start" writing by following this pattern:

Once you're done, cut the corners off the fabric and fold the exceeding edges to fit the fabric on to the crocheted screen. Then sew the fabric on it.

At this point, glue or sew each console's key/button on the phone case, and the screen too.

For the screen, count 3 rows under round 37 of the phone case, to sew or glue the top of the screen.

And then you're finally done, congrats!

Don't forget to comment if you like my pattern and design, it always make me so happy to read your comments. You can share this page to your crochet friends so they can also learn how to make the cutest phone case ever.
